Individual Writing Consultations

In individual consultations, we will work collaboratively to address your writing needs. These sessions can focus on a specific document or set of documents, such as applications, revise and re-submits, chapters, etc. For each session, you will fill out a short cover sheet to help me better understand the document, your audience, and what kinds of challenges you’re facing. Typically, each session is 60 minutes, during which we can cover up to 10 pages of a document. Please note, these sessions are not for line-editing; they are meant to be collaborative discussions to help you recognize and solve your biggest writing challenges.

In addition to looking at your writing, these sessions may also include a series of rhetorical analyses on articles or books in your field. These “field analysis” sessions will help give you a clearer understanding of the conventions and expectations of readers in your field.

I recommend individual consultations for advanced academic and professional writers who have already begun working on a writing project (for drafting sessions, see Individual Coaching options)

Individual Writing Coaching

Different from consultations, these sessions help you analyze and assess your current writing strategies so you can see what’s working for you and what is holding you back. While we may look at some of your writing together, these sessions are focused on helping you develop a more sustainable writing practice.

You can book coaching sessions at any stage of the writing process — including before you begin writing.

These sessions are recommended for writers of all levels who struggle with the process of writing, from blocking off time to write, to struggling with internal and external resistance. You can book a coaching session whether or not you have any writing done! Together, we will work to build a sustainable and healthy writing practice for you.

Developmental Editing

Sometimes you just need someone to read over your document and give you feedback on your structure, clarity, and/or argumentation.

Developmental editing sessions typically start with a consultation, where I learn about your audience, your goals for the document, and any challenges you’re facing. As I develop a clear understanding of your audience, I will then use that as I read over your document and provide feedback. While I might make some changes via track changes in the document, these comments are mostly questions and suggestions for you to consider as you revise. I understand how important your work is to you, and want to ensure that you ultimately feel in charge of the document.

I recommend developmental editing for writers who have already begun work on a document, and who have text that they can send me. (If you are struggling to get words on the page, see Coaching services). Developmental editing services are all done over email and/or Zoom, and can be combined with other services as well. Initial consultations are free.

Small-Group Workshops

In small group workshops, you will work collectively with a group of your colleagues to discuss and improve your writing. By going over a series of examples from your group’s field or profession, we will work to develop strategies to effectively manage the challenges that arise in texts you produce for your particular audience(s). Throughout the workshop, you will have the time and space to discuss and practice these strategies with your colleagues on examples and/or on your own writing samples.

You will not learn rules in this workshop, but rather, you will come away with concrete analytical strategies so you and your colleagues are better poised to speak with one another about writing in your field/profession, and to make effective revision decisions.

Small-group workshops are recommended for up to 10 people who feel comfortable sharing writing with one another and openly discussing writing challenges in order to develop effective solutions. Workshops are typically 2 hours, and can cover 1 or 2 writing and revision tools. Workshops can be designed as individual events, or a series.

Large-Group Presentations

Presentations are great for larger groups (more than 10) — faculty in a department, colleagues in an office — who have common writing challenges and goals.

Working from examples in your field or profession, in these sessions we will develop an understanding of what makes writing in your field/profession challenging. From those challenges, we will develop tools to craft more successful documents for your audience(s). Throughout the presentation, there will be time to practice (individually or in pairs) on examples I have designed.

Presentations are great for larger teams or entire departments. Like the small-group workshops, you will not learn rules, but rather, you will come away with concrete analytical strategies so you and your colleagues are better poised to speak with one another about writing in your field/profession, and to make effective revision decisions.

Write-Ins & Bootcamps

Write-ins and Bootcamps can help provide accountability and can kickstart your writing. You’ll set and share your writing goals, learn some writing strategies, and write!

Write-ins are one-day events (though can be scheduled as a series), and are typically at least 3 hours. During this time, you will set and share writing goals for the day, and I will give you some best practices for successfully making space for your writing time.

Bootcamps are a series of scheduled writing days — at least 3 days in a row. They can be short — as little as 30 minutes! — or, they can be longer, and combined with writing instruction and/or coaching sessions.

Write-ins and Bootcamps are great for writers who need to kickstart a writing practice, make progress on a project, but who need the accountability support of their colleagues.

You can set up a write-in or bootcamp for your colleagues, or attend one of my online write-ins (see Events).

 Commitment to Accessibility

I am committed to making all writing support services fully accessible. I am happy to make revisions to formats, delivery style, and pacing. I encourage all clients to let me know what works for them throughout the entire consulting process so we can proactively work together to reduce barriers to access.
